As an employee
I created my first website for an employer way back in 1996, when I was the Communications Officer for a not-for-profit organization. (A record of that site’s home page actually still exists on the Internet Archive, here.) In each subsequent Marketing Manager position that I held, I did the hands-on web design and maintenance work for those companies as well (archive examples of which also still exist here, here, and here).
From a design point of view, those old sites are looking pretty dated now, but they all contained a wealth of useful information for the interested visitor, which has always been my main focus for any website that I’ve created. The important thing, regardless of the web fashion of the day, is the content.
As a freelancer
And since 2006, my brother John and I have designed and maintained the websites for many small businesses, from various countries, through our own small business, Best Light Communication. We emphasize the importance of having a clean, well-organized, and mobile-friendly (“responsive”) website, and we often use either Bootstrap, Foundation, or WordPress as the foundation for the mobile-friendly sites that we build for our clients.
You can find examples of some of the websites that we’ve built and/or maintain on the home page of our Best Light Communication website.
And this site too
This website is also an example of a site that I built for a small business (in this case, my own!). It’s built with WordPress, using a great framework known as Genesis, which John and I often use at Best Light too. We like it because it’s flexible, mobile-friendly right out of the starting gate, and built on reliable code that is supported both by the company that built it, and by a large team of volunteer fellow Genesis enthusiasts.
